The most commonly used raw material for industrial good is metal. Metal serves a great purpose in the production of many consumer goods. The economy of most countries depends on these industries. Thus, these manufacturing industries take up the major portion of the GDP in the most developing and developed country. But these metals do not have direct input in the production process. Their conversion into sheet metal is a must.

What is sheet metal?

When the metal is transformed into a smooth and flat piece, it is called a metal sheet. Using raw metal in production is not possible. It carries impure substances that can affect the overall concentration of the resulted product. Hence, the metal goes through several procedures of cleaning. It is broke down into minute particles during those procedures and then shaped into the sheet metal

Why is sheet metal formed?

It is not possible to use the raw form of the metal. The metals do not have any proper shape and need to be processed. Converting them into the sheet is the easiest option. It is because sheets can go through the process of bending and welding easily. Thus, it speeds up production and saves time. 

What are the types of metals?

Sheet metal can be formed from different types of metal. The metals that are commonly used are stainless steel, brass, copper, aluminium, and cold rolled steel. Manufacturing companies use the metal that as a low corrosion and rust possibility. Having so will make the output more durable. Aluminium and stainless steel come in different grades. The level of heat tolerance and corrosion rate differs among graded aluminium and stainless steel sheets. 

Most industrial goods need stainless steel, and cold rolled steel for their production. Metals like brass and copper help to manufacture architectural goods. It is because patina gives these metals an advantage by making them look desirable. Lastly, aluminium is the ideal metal for cooking utensils because of its heat resistant nature.

What is the fabrication process?

The fabrication process is the conversion of the raw metal into the sheet metalThere are three types of this process:

  • Forming involves stamping, bending and roll forming.
  • Cutting involves laser cutting, waterjet cutting and machining.
  • Joining involves welding, brazing and adhesives.

Different metals require different fabrication process. Using the wrong fabrication process can affect the overall properties of the metal. Thus, it took away the sole nature of the metal and made them useless. Hence, the knowledge of the types of metals and the fabrication process is a requirement in the metal industry.

The existence of the metal sheet is to make the metal accessible. It eases the process of production. Using a metal directly for making a consumer good can take a lot of time and manual labour. Thus, the process is divided into two types of industries. These sheets are manufactured in one industry and then delivered to another for the production of the goods.
